Mothers Union members volunteer in grassroots ministries that support women and families in 84 nations worldwide. We also have members who serve as delegates
to the United Nations. Here are just a few stories…

Mothers Union Gambella, Ethiopia

Mothers Union is a key part of the Anglican Church in Ethiopia with an initial 100 members growing to over 3,000 in 14 years. The majority of new Mothers Union members are originally from South Sudan and arrived in Ethiopia as refugees, fleeing their country’s conflict and settling in camps in the Gambella region.

Through its Literacy program, Mothers Union has helped different refugee groups work together to learn and teach literacy and health programs to help these families get out of poverty.  Peace-building between diverse ethnic groups and the building of the church have been the result of these ministries that support individuals, families and communities of all faiths. Mothers Union members also volunteer in Hospital visitation, Prison ministry and Emergency relief programmes.

Mothers Union Baghdad, Iraq

Mothers Union members in Iraq are very dedicated and active in their local communities. There are over 3000 members centred at St George Church in Baghdad and across the regions of this war-torn land. They meet daily beginning with prayer and fellowship around God’s Word. They serve meals, provide medical support, education and housing for those in need. They bring hope to displaced Christians and broken communities alike, never discriminating, only serving under God.

Their practical outreach work is particularly valued by local families as there are no official care or support systems in place in Iraq to support vulnerable individuals.

Mothers Union Supporting Refugees Worldwide

Mothers Union has a long history of helping refugees around the world. Each year we bring emergency relief to approximately 25,000 people fleeing conflict, violence and persecution. We are experienced in dealing with large-scale crises and can help churches and communities right at the grassroots level to maximise the support we can give including:

  • Training to people who come across young refugees in their line of work, such as church professionals, lawyers, social workers and the emergency services. We equip them to better understand and respond to the issues faced by refugee children.

  • Humanitarian aid such as food, shelter, clothing and water for refugees

  • Funding post-trauma counselling and support

  • Providing literacy and income producing programs that actually work

Mothers Union - UNCSW

Delegates from Mothers Union serve as part of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW).

The aim of the UNCSW is “instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.”

Mothers Union has an important role to play in making sure that the voice and needs of our members and women around the world are heard and present in agreed conclusions, holding Governments to account.

Recent Mothers Union delegates have come from Sudan, Canada, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana and Ireland.
